Create a “Tech Time Plan” That Works for Your Family

Let’s be honest, screens are part of our everyday lives now. Between school assignments, YouTube, and games, it can be hard to figure out how much screen time is too much (or when it’s even realistic to say no). If you’ve ever felt torn between letting your child unwind with a device and wanting to set healthy limits, you’re not alone.

One thing that’s helped many families, including mine, is creating a simple Tech Time Plan. It’s a flexible guide we came up with together, so expectations are clear and we’re all on the same page. Here’s how it works:

📅 Set the “When”

Choose times of day when screen time is okay, maybe after homework, chores, or outdoor play. Having structure makes it easier to say, “Not yet,” or “Now’s the time.”

🎮 Agree on the “What”

Talk about what types of screen time are okay. Think learning apps, creative games, documentaries, or family-friendly shows, not just endless scrolling or videos on autoplay.

⏳ Decide the “How Long”

Timers are your best friend. Set realistic limits based on your child’s age and daily routine, and try to stick to them. If your child is old enough, involve them in setting the time. It helps build ownership and responsibility.
